More of the same from Washington!
President Obama set two goals pertaining to health reform: 1) to overhaul the system by curbing rapidly rising costs, and 2) to provide health insurance coverage to the approximately 45 million Americans that are currently uninsured. He had hoped to have the deal completed by October; a goal that, at this writing, appears will not be met. Here are some things to think about: The US population as of 1/1/2009: 305,529,237 Americans without health insurance: 45,000,000 Americans with health insurance *: 260,000,000 Cost of Health Care in the US: $2,200,000,000,000 Health Care Cost/insured American: $8,461 Cost to insure the 45,000,000 @ $8,461: $380,769,000,000 Percentage increase: 17.3%
*Employer sponsored insurance, individual insurance, Medicare or Medicaid
I thought this would be a good place to start. READ MORE. |

August is recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly. August is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. Parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season. Why are immunizations important? READ MORE. |

THE COMPLIANCE CORNER...........
PAUL WELLSTONE AND PETE DOMENICI MENTAL HEALTH PARITY AND ADDICTION EQUITY ACT OF 2008, effective for plan years beginning in October 2009, requires plans that offer both medical/surgical and mental health/substance abuse benefits to do so on an equal basis (i.e. co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance limits, frequency/number of visit limits and coverage days cannot be more restrictive than those for medical/surgical benefits).
MICHELLE'S LAW, effective for plan years beginning on October 9, 2009, amends the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, the Public Health Service Act, and the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to ensure that dependent students who take a medically necessary leave of absence do not lose health insurance coverage. All full-time student verification notices and Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) need to be amended to describe the Law by the effective date. |
